In 2021, the Heliotrope Foundation partnered with Za’Kiyah House to create The Sanctuary, a community center and transitional living space aimed at addressing challenges faced by individuals with criminal records.
Za’Kiyah House is a Pittsburgh-based organization that supports previously incarcerated people experiencing homelessness, drug addiction, and recidivism. The Sanctuary is housed in an old church that required extensive repairs. Oficina Design and local architect Jason Roth collaborated with Za’Kiyah House to repurpose the space, integrating community functions housing and within the original structure of this space of worship. The team developed a phased vision plan, considering both fundraising strategies and construction needs while working closely with the Heliotrope Foundation to secure funding, materials, and resources.
Phase 1, completed in 2022, addressed critical issues, including a new roof and 31 double-glass windows to protect the building from further weather damage. Phase 2 focused on replacing two large gothic-style stained glass windows. Heliotrope’s founder, artist Swoon, created a custom made design for the windows, which were hand-crafted by local artists who are also members of the Za’Kiyah House community. Stained glass artist Jane Hein skillfully restored broken pieces and created new stain glass elements that integrate Swoon’s design and substitute broken elements. The artistic collaboration marks a decade-long commitment by Swoon to community-based arts and justice work in Braddock.
Currently in progress, Phase 3 involves a full renovation of the lower level, transforming it into a large scale social hall with new restrooms, a commercial kitchen, and office spaces. This multi-purpose space will host a variety of community programs and large events, such as concerts and other shows.
Looking ahead, The Sanctuary will also provide housing for families facing discrimination due to criminal records. This model aims to keep families together and with that, prevent children from entering the foster care system.
